Picnic Areas

If you’re looking for a San Diego picnic spot that offers jaw-dropping ocean views, then Kate Sessions Park is a must. Named after local horticulturalists and “Mother of Balboa Park” Kate Sessions, this 79-acre park is renowned for its panoramic views of Mission Bay, downtown San Diego, and SeaWorld.

Aside from its secluded location, the park has some awesome picnic areas for you to enjoy! The grassy hill next to the playground is a great place to spread out a blanket and catch those amazing views.

The picnic area near the restrooms is a little bit of a walk away, but if you’re looking for shade then this is an excellent option. There are also a few tables in the back of the tot lot and a hot coal bin (pictured above).

Playground

Located on a hill with expansive views of Mission Bay, downtown, and the ocean this park is a favorite for local families. There is plenty of space for kids to play with a playground, open grassy areas, and picnic tables.

The best part is that this is a dog-friendly park, though be sure to leash your pooch when walking or playing. The playground is simple, with one structure for ages 5-12 with a few slides and spinners and a second structure for older kids with monkey bars.

This park also has a section of natural habitat including scrub-covered open space that is perfect for hiking or exploring nature. There are many trees, benches, drinking fountains, and a 0.75-mile paved walking path.

Kate Sessions Park is named after the ‘Mother of Balboa Park,’ Kate Sessions, who was responsible for planting hundreds of exotic plants throughout San Diego. After her urging for a park on Mount Soledad, the city finally put aside land for this lovely park which was originally named Soledad Terrace Park but changed to Kate Sessions Park in 1957 on her 100th birthday.
